Cool Moose, Weird Guy

Jan 17 2012

I have  to admit that I get a little goofy when I see a moose and I can even admit I may look like a kid on Christmas but I have to chuckle at these Norwegians and there expressions after having close call with a moose walking down a forest road in Norway.

New Zealand Moose 2012

For over 3 years I have been following a New Zealand man by the name of Ken Tustin a biologist who spent the past 35 years in search of moose in New Zealand’s Fiordland.  The Fiordland is a very remote and large wilderness area in New Zealand and very well could be the last stronghold for a moose.

Moose were first brought to the large Pacific Island in 1910 where they lived for the next 40 years until the last one was killed by a Hunter in 1950.  However, since that last confirmed sighting over 60 years ago encounters with moose in this remote area have been reported.

Mr. Tustin since the early 1970′s has spent much of his summer’s living in the Fiordland with his wife hoping for a chance to capture some sort of evidence that moose still call New Zealand home. He has had his close calls and even found evidence that moose were present on the island as lately as 2002 when he discovered moose hairs. These hairs were confirmed through DNA to be in fact from moose and as recently as recently as 2 years ago his motion capture camera caught what looks to be a young moose peering at the camera. Unfortunately he has yet to find conclusive video or picture of evidence of moose in New Zealand.

If there are moose still roaming the wilds of New Zealand then Ken Tustin will the be man to find them and hopefully if and when he does it will be the end to one of the greatest moose hunts in recent history.

A New Year

Jan 6 2012

russian_bull_moose

It’s the New Year and with it comes those yearly Resolution’s that we make only to abandon when February rolls around. This year I made a resolution to not only exercise and read more but to write in this moose post as much as I possibly can. This mean’s I will need to once again scour the web for any moose related content and present it to my minimal follower’s in a way that is both slightly interesting and humorous.

So let’s start 2012 off with a bang and get this moose back on the road, and hopefully by the time the world ends on December 21st I will have accumulated enough random moose stuff to read as we try to live through the upcoming Armageddon.

Fenced In

In an effort to curb the increasing amount of moose car collisions in Canada, fences are constructed to make sure that the big brutes stay out of the way of vehicles and those who drive them. However every so often a moose gets a little confused and finds himself trapped within the fence. Here is a interesting story where this exact thing took place.
