Besides moose, wolves love to eat salmon, or at least the wolves found in Alaska’s interior. Reports have shown salmon make up one third of the wolves diet found in the Northwest part of the state. Moose are still numero uno on the wolves menu, but it is nice to see that they tend to eat salmon as well. I mean who doesn’t like salmon (fresh Alaskan salmon too). I have had the opportunity to fish for and eat fresh Alaskan Salmon and wow, those wolves know what they are doing or eating.
Sad story of out Newfoundland where an 18 year old girl was killed after striking a moose. It is always heartbreaking when a life is lost in such a horrible accident. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of this young woman.
For over 60 years wolves and moose have lived in their own private biosphere on the island Isle Royale located in Lake Superior. Moose are thought to have from swum from Canada to the island at the turn of the century. Wolves entered the park in 1950 by crossing an ice bridge. Since that time biologists from around the world have studied this little biosphere and the interaction between the moose and wolves there as well as the effects of pollution and climate change on these two species.
This article touches on the moose and wolf populations currently, and the negative effects of interbreeding and climate change that have plagued the isolated island recently. Moose populations are rebounding, while wolf populations are the smallest they have been in years. Scientists say the extinction of wolves is however not a possibility as the wolves have seen trends like this before hand.
